I recently purchased MAC’s reformulated bring back nudes that were previously discontinued. I was super excited when they started teasing these because prior to the news being leaked I actually had already purchased a vintage folio from the 90’s brand new in box from Japan because of Erin Parson’s video she had made about folio, as it was apparently Angelina Jolie’s favorite grey nude in the 90’s. I made some more vintage MAC purchases that I’m planning on making separate blog posts for later ;D

But anyways majority of 2024 I have been obsessed with cool toned makeup and have been building my collection as I have also realized my skin tone is cool toned?? like I wish I realized this a long time ago to be honest I had been assuming since I was 12 that I had a warm yellowy/orange skin tone entirely just because I am asian and I feel like that was generally what most beauty content creators pushed as well. Whilst I do feel like these lipsticks are generally MUCH more cool toned than anything that has been released in years by MAC and most mainstream brands, I honestly think they could have made them a smidgen more. SUE ME

I included a swatch of stone lipliner 1. bc I really like it and I use it often 2. I feel like it’s noticeably more cool toned than the lipstick. Stone lipstick seems to lean VERY slightly more brown/warm and folio looks a bit more of a warm toned grey than what I had pictured. As for acting natural I am so incredibly in love with this shade. I did think that I would like it but in my opinion it is the perfect nude for something pale borderline grey it seems to have a little hint of pink which I think helps keep it balanced. Overall I think they did a great job at making 90’s accurate cool toned nudes and would probably look especially cooler on people with more warmth in their skin.

As for the new formula of their lipsticks I personally think they really nailed it. Both formulations apply smoothly with no skips or patchiness. The matte is opaque, non drying and very comfortable to wear. The satin has a nice gloss without sacrificing opacity and whilst it does fade and transfer through eating and drinking, as would any satin formula, it does so gradually and nicely.

I was really surprised to see that the 90’s version of folio was much peachier than their new updated version. Also can’t lie it pained me horribly to swatch an untouched vintage lipstick but I didn’t really care to let it waste away on a shelf plus I’m not curating a makeup museum like Erin Parsons so I have no reason to keep it in pristine condition. The formula of the original folio was actually a satin and you can tell in a few of the photos that it does have a bit more shine to it than the silky matte formula. You may also notice its quite a bit more patchy and the swatch isn’t as smooth as the new folio and that’s probably due to the age of the lipstick, it has dried up quite a bit and so it isn’t performing as well as it would have 25+ years ago. It is also possible that the color shifted over time as well. If you’re curious at all about what old ass lipstick smells like it smells like a box of crayons, people that swatch them on TikTok are a little dramatic imo sometimes they act like its really awful when its just very clay like. I means it is very much still kind of a sweet scent just not that delicious MAC vanilla you crave.

So yeah this has been my first blog post ever/review please please please let me dig through your mom and grandma’s and great grandma’s old makeup drawers I really like old ass makeup. And I am hoping and praying people bring back swatch photos and beauty blogs I love looking at swatches and reviews but I might just not be well versed on blogs to be honest the only one I really look at is Temptalia.
