My favorite things of 2024 :]

1. Liverwurst

where has this mystery meat paste been all my life holyyyyy shit. I mean its basically cheap pâté. Genuinely I think this delicious meat spread should be mandatory in every single household, even if you don’t like liver I think you will love this. My personal favorite way to eat it is on a trader joes baguette light spread of whole grain mustard, thin slices of sweet onion and a few healthy cracks of fresh black pepper. I think a Viet fusion with some mayo, pickled carrots and daikon, and cilantro would also be gas.

2. But I’m a Cheerleader (1999)

I didn’t know that a screen cap of this movie that I saw probably in 2012 was what influenced my spam username. I’m also mad that it took me this long to watch this cult classic. Everything about this was perfect and easily was my favorite movie I watched the entire year (ik it didn’t come out in 2024 idc stfu). Beautifully shot and perfectly campy, just very very iconic queer media.

3. Selected Unpublished Blog Posts From A Mexican Panda Express Employee by Megan Boyle

I had wanted to read this ever since I saw an excerpt of “Everyone I’ve Had Sex With” on Tumblr back in 2014 and I’m so happy I did. It’s a very unconventional and fun read that holds up a decade after its release. Also this was the first book I have read in its entirety in probably the past 5+ years.

4. Kodak EasyShare C190

my digicam!!! I use it sm and I got it from mercari in pretty much almost perfect condition for only $14. 🙂 I love that it takes a standard sd and double a batteries bc it makes it super easy n simple to use n keep up with. The quality on it is sooo good for the price too its 12 mp and I take all of my non iPhone pics with this.

5. Cool Toned Makeup

I kinda realized in 2024 that I have a more cool toned complexion and it has fr changed my life. My favorite cool toned makeup products so far have been: MAC stone lipliner, Urban Decay Naked Basics 2 Palette, Romand Blueberry Chip Blush, Lancome Matte Shaker in Dark Fiction, Romand Lip Mate Pencil in Taupey Shade, Romand Juicy Lasting Tint in Bare Grape, & Makeup Forever lip liner in Endless Cacao.

6. Old Navy Ultra Low Waist Cargo Pants

I got my first pair at my local thrift store and I became so obsessed with them that I now have 3 pairs of cargos, a pair of jeans, and a pair of jean shorts all in ultra low waist. I bought the rest second hand on eBay and Poshmark and they’re my favorite pants ever now. PLUS they were all pretty affordable and they’re fairly easy to find online bc they’re not too sought after.

7. Sackboy Plush

my little buddy I keep him in my purse and carry him w me so I can take cute little digicam photos of him. I also played all the original games and it was just the best most comforting nostalgia I just have so much love for this silly little knit guy.

8. Apple Cheddar Pistachio Salad with Creamy Shallot-Date Dressing by Molly Baz

best fucking salad of 2024, I got my family addicted to it and they wouldn’t stop asking for it. I make some slight changes depending on what I have in my fridge, so most of the time I crumble up some parm instead of cheddar, use envy apples instead of honey crisp or gala, and typically just a spring mix. you can get this recipe from her website, its only $5 a month for delicious and creative recipes that have never failed me I highly HIGHLY recommend!!

9. Nok’s Kitchen

my favorite restaurant my dad discovered this year!!! I love Laos food :DDDD

Nok’s kitchen is my families new favorite spot for Laotian cuisine. My mom grew up in Laos and she said herself that when she ate this food it reminded her so much of home. When I eat here it reminds me of the all the traditional delicious meals my mom made me growing up but on another level. Everything was even better than all my childhood memories and the sauce was to die for. The service was also fantastic & every time I go the servers are so kind and personable. If you end up going be sure to bring a pack of sausages and a container of sauce home with you.

10. Stardew Valley Pink Cake

I made this cake for Brett’s 23rd birthday because we both love Stardew and its actually probably the best couple game to play, if not one of the best games ever made period. The cake recipe was definitely a bit of work but it all paid off. The freeze dried strawberries in the buttercream, the watermelon strawberry jam, and the duck eggs instead of chicken eggs??? Total game changer I definitely recommend making it. I’m a bit picky with cakes and I don’t usually eat more than one slice but I demolished this shit.

11. Xiaohongshu/Rednote Makeup

I’ve taken A LOT of inspo from all the xhs girls and have tried out a few of the looks and its been sm fun. I felt like I was in a makeup rut for a long time and was getting tired of the same old techniques but watching their differently has made makeup a lot more interesting. they inspired me to completely change the way I contour and do my lips on a daily basis.

12. Sticker bombing

I mean its technically not new to me but I have just been enjoying it a lot this year and have been putting stickers on everything I put my dirty mitts on

13. Jeow Mak Muang

a green mango dip originating from Laos that I probably made 20+ times, I made an instagram story about how I made it and it I couldn’t stop eating I actually was making myself sick eating it so much but I couldn’t stop because it was so good.

14. Vintage Makeup Collecting

I started collecting mainly old 90’s MAC lipsticks and have accumulated 24 vintage MAC lipsticks this year alone. I’m thinking of getting into other brands like Urban Decay, Maybelline, Revlon, Hard Candy etc. I also want to find a 1920s dance purse with specifically one with a compartment for powder, blush, coins, lipstick, and perfume. But honestly researching old products and learning about their history has been soooo cool and one of my favorite creators, Erin Parsons, has so many TikTok’s and Youtube videos about makeup history, techniques and products and I’ve learned a lot just from her videos and they’re 100% worth the watch.

15. I <3 Lesbos Shirt

I bought this on grilled for $29 on 4/20 and it is fr my favorite item of clothing and my prized possession. its the perfect shirt and I have never really heard anyone talk about the brand its still bit of a mystery to me.

9. Chappell Roan Hate

undeserved, when I hear a man criticize her all I hear is “I hate women and I don’t care who knows it” literally nothing I ever read about something she did or said deters me away from being a fan of her and her music. also btw chapell is 10000% my favorite artist of the year, she’s amazing truly changed my life forever

10. N*na P**l

I initially had two big ass paragraphs of text talking about why I hate Nina pool’s duperoonies but I will summarize it very quickly: I don’t like when people say her being autistic automatically makes her an expert on shit. just because hair gel is safe for hair doesn’t mean its safe for eyes. 70% isopropyl alcohol makes no sense as a setting spray. she is overly defensive and I don’t feel like she is able to take any criticism.

11. Haus Labs Foundation

I got the kit that lets you sample it before you buy and I hated it it sat on my skin weird it really emphasized dry spots and texture :/ I don’t understand the hype I keep trying to adjust the method but it just looks ugly on me. I wanted to like it so bad but it was gross on me.

12. Hitting a Chair on the Freeway

it was like one of those metal and mesh ones and it fucked up my car now I drive as little as I possibly can.

13. Being an Assistant Manager

I started working at spirit halloween when I turned 16 and I had the opportunity to be assistant manager and I did not like it I had managing related nightmares for months and stomach issues from stress. Still glad I gave it a shot but that was fs my last year I can’t do it anymore sorry. also the theme songs were genuinely some of the worst things I’ve ever heard. I heard these every day multiple times for months. (also apparently spirit halloween does not donate the change they get to charities, only donate when people agree to a FULL dollar or more to the children hospital so lowkey they’re scamming people)

14. South Park Snow Day

bruhhh I loved the first two games so much they were so fun and just perfect in every way, seamless representations of the show that showcased the humor so well it felt like an actual episode in the best way. I was so excited for Snow Day but it fell short in all aspects for me 🙁 I hated the controls, the levels were short and repetitive and overall lacked the charm the first two games had.

15. Mean Girls (2024)

I have so so so so so many gripes about this movie, some are probably stupid but I don’t really care AND I don’t care that I’m not an expert on musicals either.

Here are my gripes not in any specific order of importance:

Gripe #1: Aaron Samuels was mid. He was not hot at ALL, I just don’t buy that someone would simp for that man.

Gripe #2: Angourie Rice’s singing was meh. Stupid in love was a JOKE

Gripe #3: They made Avantika’s Karen too stupid, it felt embarrassing and over infantilizing for a character so sexualized. Like why tf did they make her try to sip juice out of her nose “accidentally” no one would do that. I actually also like Avantika as an actress too she seems very beautiful and talented but the baby voice they made her talk in and the dumb jokes they did for her were over exaggerated and not really funny TBH. (Brett note: They made Karen act like that TikTok where that guy captioned it “My ADHD Hit while making a video”)

Gripe #4: I don’t think they should have made Janis Ian a lesbian, esp an out and proud one. HEAR ME OUT I feel like original Rachel McAdams’s Regina George was a closeted lesbian and Janis was straight and most of the bullying directed towards Janis was projection on Regina’s part. I feel like it takes away a bit from the real reason why Regina was bullying people which was just deep rooted insecurity and entitlement.
